SMC have a Health Policy and a Code of Conduct which we have introduced for the benefit of all members. Please take the time to have a read as to our expectations.
SMC HEALTH POLICY
Introduction: This health policy is established to ensure the well-being and safety of all members participating in the Sydney Male Choir, a voluntary amateur male choir.
The primary goal is to create a supportive and healthy environment that promotes the enjoyment of music while prioritising the physical and mental health of our members.
1. Physical Health Guidelines:
Physical Assessments: - All members are encouraged to undergo a basic physical assessment before joining the choir to ensure their ability to participate in rehearsals and performances.
Hydration: - Members are advised to stay adequately hydrated during rehearsals and performances. Regular breaks will be incorporated to facilitate hydration.
Warm-Up and Stretching: - The Music Director will lead the Choir members through basic warm-up exercises and stretching routines before rehearsals and performances to prevent injuries.
Medical Conditions: - Members are responsible for disclosing any relevant medical conditions or concerns to the Medical Advisor and or the Safety Officer. This information will be treated confidentially and used to adapt activities accordingly.
2. Mental Health and Well-being:
Open Communication: - The choir encourages open communication about mental health. Members are urged to share concerns or stressors with the Safety Officer or a designated member of the leadership team.
Supportive Environment: - Sydney Male Choir is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Members are encouraged to be mindful of their fellow singers and offer support when needed.
Flexibility: - The choir acknowledges the importance of balancing personal and choir commitments. Members are encouraged to communicate scheduling conflicts in advance, and flexible arrangements may be considered.
3. Performing with the Choir:
Costume and Attire: - Members shall adhere to the designated costume or attire for performances. Consideration will be given to the comfort and suitability of the attire for the well-being of each member.
Rehearsal Intensity: - Leading up to performances, rehearsal intensity may increase. Members are expected to communicate any physical or mental concerns to the Safety Officer promptly.
Performance Readiness: - Members should strive to be physically and mentally prepared for performances. Adequate rest, nutrition, and hydration are essential in the days leading up to a performance.
Pre-performance Warm-Up: - A structured pre-performance warm-up routine will be implemented to ensure that members are physically prepared and reduce the risk of injuries during performances.
Risk Assessment: - A risk assessment will be conducted by the SMC Safety Officer at each venue prior to a performance. This risk assessment will identify key risks and mitigations which will be communicated to all choristers prior to commencement of a performance.
Health Declaration: - All members are required to complete a health declaration pro forma. This Health Declaration pro forma requests the members to provide important health information for use in an emergency that will be kept confidential and secure by the SMC Secretary.
Health Concerns: - Where there are concerns about a member’s physical ability to perform on stage for two hours including moving on and off risers safely, the member will be required to gain a clearance from their general practitioner to confirm that they are fit for the above.
SMC medical advisor: - In cases of g above, consultation with the choir’s Medical Advisor Dr Bernie Haylen will be undertaken by both the member and the SMC Safety Officer.
4. COVID-19 and Other Contingency Measures:
Health Screenings: - Members are required to adhere to any health screenings or protocols implemented due to communicable diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19.
Remote Participation: - In the event of illness or quarantine requirements, members may be given the option to participate remotely in rehearsals and performances.
Adaptation of Activities: - The choir will adapt its activities as necessary to comply with public health guidelines and ensure the safety of all members.
4. Emergency Procedures:
Emergency Contacts: - Members are required to provide emergency contact information for use in case of accidents or sudden health issues during rehearsals or performances.
First Aid Kit: - A first aid kit will be available during rehearsals and performances, and designated individuals will be trained in basic first aid.
Review and Amendments: This health policy will be periodically reviewed by the choir leadership to ensure its effectiveness. Amendments may be made as needed to address emerging health concerns or changes in the choir's activities.
Acknowledgment: All members are required to read, understand, and acknowledge receipt of this health policy. Failure to comply with the guidelines may result in restrictions on participation for the well-being of the individual and the entire choir.
CODE OF CONDUCT
The Code of Conduct for The Sydney Male Choir (SMC) is established to cultivate a culture of mutual respect, professionalism, and musical excellence. It provides a framework to ensure a harmonious and inclusive environment where members can collaborate effectively, fostering a sense of community and dedication to the shared artistry of choral music.
Additionally, elements such as punctuality, dress code, and adherence to legal requirements contribute to the overall success of the choir’s performances and help maintain a positive reputation within the broader community.
The Code of Conduct serves as a guide, promoting individual growth, collective achievement, and safeguarding of the well-being of all choir members.
All SMC choir members to adhere to the following:
1. Respect and Professionalism:
Treat fellow choir members, executive committee members, and staff with respect and professionalism at all times.
Maintain a positive and inclusive atmosphere within the choir.
2. Punctuality:
Arrive on time for all rehearsals, performances, and events.
Notify the choir President or Secretary in advance if you are unable to attend a scheduled activity.
3. Dress Code:
Adhere to the specified dress code for each performance and event.
Present yourself in a neat and tidy manner, reflecting the choir’s commitment to excellence.
4. Commitment to Rehearsals:
Attend at least 75% of all scheduled rehearsals, and physically attend at least 3 out of 4 rehearsals before a concert, and actively engage in the learning process.
Practice independently to ensure mastery of assigned music.
5. Communication:
Communicate openly and respectfully with choir members and leadership
Notify the choir Music Director or the President of any concerns or issues promptly.
6. Confidentiality:
Respect the confidentiality of choir-related matters and discussions.
7. Musical Integrity:
Strive for musical excellence and commit to continuous improvement.
Follow the direction of the Music Director and support the overall artistic vision.
8. Teamwork:
Work collaboratively with fellow choir members to create a harmonious musical experience.
Support and encourage your peers in their musical endeavours.
9. Etiquette during Performances:
Maintain focus and composure during performances.
Refrain from unnecessary talking or distracting behaviour while on stage.
10. Adherence to Policies:
Abide by all choir policies, including those related to conduct, safety, and attendance.
Working with Children Clearance:
All SMC members must obtain and maintain the necessary working with children clearance as required by local laws and regulations. This clearance ensures the safety and protection of children that the SMC may from time to time rehearse and or perform with.
Prior to being admitted as a member of the choir, members are responsible for providing evidence of a valid working with children clearance to the choir leadership who will keep a register with the expiration date of the clearance.
This clearance should remain current throughout the duration of their membership. Failure to renew the required clearance at the appropriate time may result in temporary suspension or, if unresolved, termination of membership.
The choir is committed to creating a secure environment for all members, and compliance with working with children clearance requirements is essential to achieving this goal.
By upholding this standard, the choir reaffirms its dedication to the well-being and safety of every individual involved in our musical community.
By adhering to the Code of Conduct, we aim to foster a supportive and musically enriching environment for all members of the choir.
Upholding the reputation and public perception of the Choir
SMC members are expected to conduct themselves with integrity and adhere to community and legal standards.
If a member is involved in any action that is likely to bring the Choir into disrepute, reflect on the reputation of the choir, is incompatible with the values and goals of the choir, or poses a risk to the safety of others and the President or executive committee is made aware of these issues, consideration will be given to what action may be taken against the member including but not limited to termination of membership.
